OZ: the Great and Powerful- spring 2013
I recently watched the tralier for "OZ the Great and Powerful" staring James Franco directed by Sam Raimi, which comes out this spring. When first read the one sentence summary I wondered if it would incorpirate something to the tune of the musical Wicked. When I watched the trailer it seemed not that way. The plot is about the actual Wizard of Oz and his backstory, I mean the whole sha bang! Not just that he is not really a wizard, it is meaning to be a pre qual to the 1939 Wizard of Oz film. The film still includes classic characters like glinda and the wicked witch of the west. Oscar (Franco) starts off as a magician in Kansas and then, gets swept up in a tornado with his airballon and misterisly ends up in OZ, sound familar? When he lands he meets new characters who are bewildered by his magic tricks, which are actually all an illusion, however "Ozians" or whatever you might call them, mistake his tricks for acutal magic, thus leading to a series of lies and confusion making up the plot. The cinematography of this film looks very similar to Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, and it is produced by the same people. It starts of in black and white and when Oscar reaches OZ it become color, personally I think that adds real depth and symbolysim to a movie, like for example in Wall-e it is silent except for music for the first part of the film and some people might hate that but I enjoyed because you focus on the beauty of the picture and things you would not have noticed before if those distractions had been there, for example bright colors or talking. I am throughly looking forward to this movie and I think that Franco is perfect for the role, the only thing is I did not like the feel of 2010 Alice in Wonderland, too creepy and dark for my taste, even though it did have some comic relief. OZ; The great and Powerful" comes out spring 2013.
